| Obverse description | Central field features the large crowned script monogram 'E' of Duke Ernest I, flanked on the left by a palm branch and on the right by a laurel branch, the two tied together at the base. The ducal crown surmounts the cipher at the top of the design. A small mint letter 'S' (for Saalfeld) appears in the exergue beneath the wreath. The overall composition is elegant and restrained, executed in the neoclassical style typical of early nineteenth-century German state coinage. |

| Reverse description | The denomination and territorial attribution are presented in three bold lines across the centre of the field, reading '3 / KREUZER' separated by a horizontal rule, with the date below. The circular legend surrounding the design identifies the coin as a land currency of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, reading 'H. S. C. S. - LAND MÜNZE.' on later varieties (KM# 128.4, 128.5) or 'H. S. C. - LAND MÜNZE.' on earlier varieties (KM# 128.1–128.3).
