Christian and Wolrad IV ruled Waldeck jointly under the county's inheritance customs, a co-regency arrangement that produced a narrow window of shared coinage before the county's further subdivision. The 1617 date places this issue on the eve of the Thirty Years' War, after which small silver fractional coinage from minor Rhenish and Westphalian counties became increasingly disrupted by currency debasement across the German states.
Waldeck's minting activity in this period was intermittent at best, making any dated issue from the county uncommon relative to larger neighboring authorities.
