Obverse description Central field features the crowned and quartered arms of the Bishopric of Strasbourg and the House of Lorraine, displayed on a baroque shield with decorative foliate mantling. The episcopal coat of arms incorporates the characteristic diagonal bend of Lorraine alongside the ecclesiastical symbols of Strasbourg. A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield, identifying the issuer as Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine and Bishop of Strasbourg, Landgrave of Alsace. The date numerals appear divided within the legend. The overall style is typical of late sixteenth-century German ecclesiastical hammered coinage.
