Additional information

Charles II ruled Inner Austria — Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola — as a separate Habsburg appanage following the division of Ferdinand I's territories among his sons in 1564. A devout Catholic, Charles spent much of his reign navigating the religious tensions of a largely Protestant nobility, issuing the Pacification of Bruck in 1578 as a temporary concession before reversing course under Jesuit influence. These kreuzers were struck at Graz during the years immediately following that reversal, as Charles moved to reassert Catholic authority across his domains — a program his son Ferdinand II would eventually complete with far greater severity.
