Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the standing bear of Appenzell rears to the left on its hind legs, rendered in the regional heraldic style typical of early 18th-century Swiss cantonal coinage. A small shield device appears at the base of the figure beneath the bear's forepaws. The surrounding legend reads MONETA NOVA REIP · APPENZ :, identifying the coin as new money of the Republic of Appenzell. The field is plain, with the entire design enclosed within a toothed border.
