| Additional information |
By 1789, the VOC was in terminal financial collapse — the company would surrender its charter to the Dutch state just four years later, in 1799. This 3 Gulden was struck at a moment when the organization was functionally insolvent, kept alive by successive government bailouts while its trade monopoly had long since eroded under British and local competition. Coins issued in these final years circulated across the company's remaining Indonesian territories as the administrative apparatus around them quietly disintegrated.
