Obverse description Draped bust of Duke Friedrich Kettler facing right, wearing a ruffled collar, within a beaded border. The ducal portrait is rendered in a late Renaissance style with fine detail to the hair and costume. The surrounding legend, in Latin, reads MON · ARG · DVCVM · CV · E · SE ·, an abbreviation for Moneta Argentea Ducum Curlandiae Et Semigalliae, identifying the coin as the silver coinage of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. The legend is interrupted by the portrait and runs continuously around the periphery of the flan.
