Tromelin Island has no permanent civilian population, no economy, and no monetary system — it is staffed only by a rotating French meteorological crew of a few researchers at any given time. These "coins" are fiscal curiosities issued under French territorial administration of the Scattered Islands, a grouping whose sovereignty France contests with Madagascar and Mauritius. They do not circulate. The Lynx designation references the French naval vessel Lynx, part of the historical record of French activity in the southern Indian Ocean.
