Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Pope John Paul II, depicted in clerical vestments with a skullcap, rendered in high relief in a realistic portrait style. The circular legend reads 'IOANNES PAVLVS II' to the left and 'PONTIFEX MAXIMVS' to the right, separated by a small decorative motif. The engraver's name 'Rodier' appears in small lettering in the lower left field near the bust's shoulder truncation.
