| Obverse description | The obverse features a densely populated underwater scene filling the central field, depicting an array of deep-sea and marine creatures rendered in fine relief, including a jellyfish, an octopus, a shrimp, a flatfish, a seahorse, coral formations, and other marine fauna amid air bubbles. The circular legend reads REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH along the upper periphery, with the denomination 3 EURO inscribed along the lower arc in large, bold characters. The design is engraved by Anna Rastl in a lively, naturalistic style, conveying the diversity of ocean life across the coin's surface. |

Part of Austria's ongoing "Sea Creatures" polymer-window series, this issue uses a traditional copper-nickel flan rather than the colored polymer inserts seen elsewhere in the run — a deliberate production choice that keeps manufacturing costs low while still targeting the collector novelty market. The €3 denomination itself is a pure collector fiction, carrying no legal tender utility beyond Austria's borders and only nominal face value within them.
The anglerfish lives at depths exceeding 1,000 meters, a detail the Austrian Mint has leaned on heavily in its promotional positioning for the series since its 2016 launch.
