Obverse description Central quartered coat of arms of Archbishop Joseph Clemens of Cologne, surmounted by an electoral bonnet and flanked by a crossed sword and crozier, the shield displaying the arms of Cologne, Bavaria, Westphalia, and Angria. The arms are elaborately mantled with decorative foliage. The circumferential legend in Latin reads IOS CLEM EL COL VIR BAV WESTPH ET ANG DUX, with the mine-origin inscription AURUM WESTP INVENT and date 1696 distributed around the lower field, attesting to the Westphalian Ausbeute (mine yield) origin of the gold.
