Johann Christian ruled Liegnitz-Brieg jointly with his brother Georg Rudolf until 1621, when the Bohemian crisis following the Battle of White Mountain forced a reckoning across Silesian duchies. The Habsburgs were consolidating control over Protestant Silesian nobles, and multiple-ducat issues from this moment functioned as much as portable wealth reserves — easily convertible, easily hidden — as they did ceremonial pieces.
1622 sits squarely in the currency chaos of the Kipper- und Wipperzeit, the debasement crisis that gutted Central European silver coinage and drove demand for high-purity gold issues.
