Obverse description Central ornate oval shield bearing the arms of Bern — a diagonally striped field with a walking bear in the lower portion — surrounded by elaborate Baroque scrollwork and foliate mantling. The shield is surmounted by a large civic crown with floral finials. The circular Latin legend runs along the outer rim, interrupted by small floral ornaments at intervals. The finely milled edge borders the entire composition, and the high-relief engraving reflects the accomplished Baroque craftsmanship characteristic of 18th-century Bernese coinage.
