Obverse description Panoramic cityscape of Frankfurt am Main rendered in fine detail, depicting the city's skyline with prominent church spires, towers, and civic buildings rising above the River Main, with sailing vessels visible on the water in the middle ground. Rays of divine light emanate from the upper field above the city. In the lower portion of the field, the city name appears within an ornate Baroque cartouche bearing the legend FRANCOFVRT. The engraving is executed in a detailed topographic style characteristic of mid-17th century German goldsmithing.

Additional information

Frankfurt struck this multiple ducat in 1648, the year the Peace of Westphalia ended the Thirty Years' War — a conflict that had devastated the Holy Roman Empire's population by an estimated one-third. As the city where Holy Roman Emperors were traditionally crowned, Frankfurt occupied a ceremonially significant position, and large-denomination gold pieces from this period frequently served as presentation gifts or diplomatic largesse rather than circulating currency.

Freudentaler and multiple-ducat issues tied to the peace negotiations are documented from several imperial cities that year. Fr#974 is rare in any condition.
