Canadian trade dollars — locally issued scrip redeemable at participating merchants during community festivals — proliferated across small Ontario municipalities through the 1980s and 1990s, with Lions Club chapters among the most active issuers. Tecumseh, a town on the north shore of Lake Erie just east of Windsor, took its name from the Shawnee leader killed at the Battle of the Thames in 1813. The Lions Club series from this period was never intended for long-term circulation, most pieces surviving unused in the envelopes they were sold in.
