This issue belongs to a wave of small-denomination gold coins produced for Tuvalu by the Perth Mint during the late 1990s, targeting collector markets rather than any functional monetary role. Tuvalu's currency relationship with Australia meant these pieces carried nominal face values with no practical circulation intent whatsoever. The Perth Mint's .9999 fine standard, adopted aggressively during this period, was a deliberate marketing distinction from competitors still issuing at .999.
