Obverse description The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as rendered by engraver Susan Taylor, depicting the Queen at approximately 77 years of age with bare head, wearing a necklace and earrings, facing right. The legend encircles the portrait, reading 'ELIZABETH II' at the upper field, '2019' below, and 'D•G•REGINA' continuing the inscription in reference to her title by the Grace of God. The denomination '3 DOLLARS' appears within the legend, completing the circular inscription. The portrait is executed in a refined, detailed style consistent with Royal Canadian Mint commemorative issues of this period.

Additional information

Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's broader cultural series, this issue commemorates Canada's folk music traditions at a moment when the RCM was producing themed collector coins at an unusually high rate — the 2019 catalog ran to several hundred distinct issues. The $3 denomination itself is a Canadian collector-market invention, carrying no circulation function and existing solely to hit a retail price point attractive to gift buyers.
