The Royal Canadian Mint has produced niobium and holographic aurora issues since the early 2000s, but by 2019 the program had expanded into a recurring series of fine silver pieces exploiting color printing and selective coating techniques developed in-house at Winnipeg. The aurora borealis theme is among the most commercially repeated in modern Canadian commemorative production — this particular issue is one of several aurora-themed pieces released in the same calendar year alone.
