| Obverse description | The obverse is divided into three main registers. At upper centre, a detailed engraved vignette of a suspension bridge over a river with buildings in the background flanked by ornate guilloche medallions bearing the numeral 3 at left and right. At lower left, a pastoral landscape vignette with a mill. At lower right, an engraved portrait of a young Queen Victoria in profile with a tiara. The bold intaglio legend ZIMMERMAN BANK and THREE DOLLARS runs centrally across the note, with the place of issue ELGIN and the date December 1856 in manuscript. A circular underprint medallion at centre bottom reads CAPITAL ONE MILLION DOLLARS. |
