Issued to commemorate the return of the VOC replica ship Amsterdam after its reconstruction voyage, this piece belongs to a cluster of Dutch commemoratives from the 1990s tied to renewed national interest in the VOC's commercial history. The original Amsterdam sank on her maiden voyage in 1749 off Hastings, England, and the wreck — unusually well-preserved in the seabed — was formally studied by Dutch researchers in the 1960s before the replica project gained momentum.
