Obverse description Central device features the United States shield superimposed upon a six-pointed star, the star distinguished on this Type II issue by three concentric outlines along its outer contour. The shield displays the customary pale and chief elements in high relief against the open field. The encircling legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA runs along the periphery, with the date positioned below the central device. The overall design, engraved by James B. Longacre, conveys a compact heraldic character appropriate to this diminutive silver denomination.
