| Obverse description | Cast iron cash coin featuring four Chinese ideograms arranged in cruciform reading order around a central square hole, executed in Regular script (kaishu). The four-character reign title inscription 嘉定永寶 (Jiading Yongbao) is read clockwise from the top, with each character occupying one of the four cardinal positions in the field. The characters are bold and well-formed, framed by an inner square rim surrounding the central perforation and an outer raised circular rim. |

Jiading was the reign title of Emperor Ningzong of the Southern Song dynasty, and iron cash of this period were not an aesthetic choice — they were a necessity. Copper had been critically short in the south since the Jin conquest stripped the dynasty of its northern mints and resource base. Iron coinage expanded aggressively to fill the gap, and the Ding furnace mark on this piece identifies the specific casting facility responsible for production, a bureaucratic detail that became increasingly important as quality control across multiple foundries deteriorated.
