Obverse description Central square hole (cash hole) surrounded by a plain inner rim and broad flat field. Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading clockwise from top: 洪 (Hóng), 通 (Tōng), 武 (Wǔ), 寶 (Bǎo), yielding the legend Hóngwǔ Tōngbǎo. The characters are boldly cast with strong relief against a smooth field, and the coin is bounded by a raised outer rim.
