Obverse description Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged symmetrically around the central square hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 洪 (top), 通 (right), 武 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the legend 'Hongwu Tongbao' — meaning 'Circulating Treasure of the Hongwu [reign]'. The characters are boldly cast in raised relief with clearly defined strokes against a flat, unadorned field. The coin is encircled by a raised outer rim and a raised inner rim framing the square perforation. The overall composition is characteristic of early Ming dynasty cash coinage, exhibiting strong, regular brushwork translated faithfully into the casting.
