Obverse description Cast iron cash coin of round form with a central square perforation. The obverse field bears the four-character reign inscription 大宋元寶 (Dasong Yuanbao) arranged in regular script (kaishu) reading top-bottom-right-left in the four quadrants surrounding the square hole. The characters are rendered in relief against a flat field, within an outer raised rim. The coin surface shows the characteristic rough texture and patination associated with iron Song dynasty cast coinage.
