| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a plain inner rim and an outer border. Four Chinese characters in Regular script (Kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading clockwise from the top: 大 (Da), 寶 (Bao), 宋 (Song), 元 (Yuan), collectively forming the reign title inscription 'Da Song Yuan Bao' (Great Song Original Currency). The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat field, with strokes showing the characteristic regularity of Southern Song official script. The coin displays typical cast fabric with a slightly granular surface consistent with iron cash production. |
