Additional information

Filippo II inherited Sardinia as part of the vast Habsburg consolidation following his father Charles V's abdication in 1556, and the island's small billon coinage reflects the chronic copper and silver shortages that plagued peripheral Spanish territories throughout his reign. The cagliarese was a purely local denominational unit, accepted nowhere outside Sardinia and worth virtually nothing by Spanish metropolitan standards — yet essential for the island's internal petty commerce.
