The Generaldirektion der Berg-, Hütten- und Salzwerke — the Bavarian state directorate overseeing mines, foundries, and saltworks — issued emergency currency during the 1923 hyperinflation alongside hundreds of other German municipal and industrial bodies exercising the same improvised authority. What distinguishes this issuer is its industrial character: a state enterprise rather than a municipality or savings bank, printing notgeld against payroll obligations it could not meet in Reichsmark fast enough to matter.
Three million marks was a substantial denomination when printed but would have lost most practical purchasing power within days of issue.
