| Obverse description | Typographically composed Notgeld on plain paper with a decorative cross-hatched guilloche border running the full perimeter. The left panel carries the numeral denomination '3 000 000' in bold block figures within a ruled box, flanked above and below by ornamental quatrefoil vignettes. The right panel bears the issuing authority 'UNIVERSITÄTSSTADT TÜBINGEN' in capitalized letterpress at the top, followed by the denomination in large blackletter Fraktur script 'Drei Millionen Mark', with the serial number in red and series designation 'III HL' in the upper margin. Tübingen's Stadtkasse entered the notgeld market during the hyperinflation peak of 1923, when municipal and commercial issuers across Germany were printing denominations that would have been unimaginable two years earlier. The 3,000,000 Mark figure reflects the summer-to-autumn acceleration specifically — by the time notes at this level were being struck, the Reichsbank's own presses could barely keep pace with demand, and local authorities were legally permitted to issue emergency currency to keep wages and commerce moving.
The embossed seal served as the primary authenticity check, a low-tech solution for a printer operating under severe time and material constraints. It was enough. Counterfeiting notgeld at this scale of inflation was economically pointless.
