Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft — the Stuttgart automaker that would merge with Benz & Cie. in 1926 — issued this notgeld in 1923 at the peak of Weimar hyperinflation, when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet payroll demands. Corporations, municipalities, and even private businesses were legally permitted to issue emergency currency to pay their workers, and Daimler took that route like hundreds of other large employers that autumn.
Three billion marks sounds extraordinary, but by late 1923 a single U.S. dollar exchanged for roughly 4.2 trillion marks. This note's face value would have bought almost nothing within days of issue.
