Struck during the Spanish siege of Leiden in 1574 — one of the most brutal urban sieges of the Eighty Years' War — this klippe belongs to a category of emergency coinage produced when the city exhausted its supply of round planchets. The garrison melted down silver plate, church goods, and whatever metal could be commandeered to keep wages paid and loyalty intact. Klippe of this siege are among the earliest Dutch siege pieces and carry documentary weight far beyond their face value.
The square cut is not decorative — it is the direct consequence of shearing sheet metal rather than drawing wire and cutting round blanks.
