Reverse description A crowned rampant lion rearing to the left dominates the central field, holding in its dexter forepaw a sword erect and in its sinister forepaw a shield bearing the arms of the city of Leiden. The date 1574 appears in the upper field, and the Latin legend HÆC LIBERTATIS ERGO arcs around the lower periphery. The design reflects the heraldic tradition of the Dutch Low Countries and commemorates the city's desperate resistance during the siege.
