Reverse description A priest advancing to the left, guiding a plough drawn by a yoke of oxen, holding a whip in his raised right hand and the reins in his left; the scene commemorates the ritual foundation ceremony (sulcus primigenius) of the Roman colony of Augusta Emerita. The figures are rendered in a compact, vigorous style characteristic of early Augustan colonial issues from Hispania. The colonial name AVGVSTA EMERITA is inscribed in two lines across the field or around the periphery, affirming the city's status as a Roman veteran colony. The reverse composition is consistent with other foundation-type reverses known from contemporaneous Spanish colonial mints.
