Merck at left, Louis Pasteur in the center and slightly prominent, and Marcel Mérieux at right. The inscription 'MILESTONES IN VACCINE AND PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH' appears on two lines below the busts. The names 'G.W. MERCK' and 'LOUIS PASTEUR' arc along the upper periphery separated by a star, while 'MARCEL MERIEUX' arcs along the lower periphery, also separated by stars. A stylized caduceus or pharmaceutical symbol is depicted in the lower field beneath the central inscription. The design is framed by a beaded border.

Additional information

Somalia in 2000 had no functioning central government — the state had collapsed in 1991 and would not reconstitute a transitional authority until 2004. These collector issues were licensed through external agencies operating under the nominal authority of regional administrations, a practice that generated substantial controversy among numismatic bodies over their legitimacy as sovereign issues. The Pharmaceutical Research theme belongs to a broader series of Somali-licensed gold issues from this period targeting the thematic collector market rather than any domestic circulation.
