The 1959 Indonesian series was issued under Sukarno's Guided Democracy period, a time when the government was consolidating economic control and the rupiah was under severe inflationary pressure. De La Rue's London contract for these notes reflected the young republic's continued reliance on established foreign security printers despite the nationalist politics of the day — a pragmatic contradiction the government rarely publicized.
Pick 70 is among the higher denominations of the series and consequently saw harder circulation use. Genuinely uncirculated survivors are uncommon.
