| Additional information |
The Bank of Mauritius was established in 1967, the same year the island gained independence from Britain, making the 55th anniversary a dual commemoration — of the institution and of the monetary autonomy that came with nationhood. Relatively few central banks in sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean region issue commemorative gold at this weight class, and Mauritius has done so with notable consistency since the 1970s.
