Reverse description The full Portuguese royal coat of arms occupies the centre of the field, comprising the traditional escutcheon charged with five inescutcheons in cross each bearing five bezants, bordered by a castle-strewn bordure, and set within an ornate Baroque cartouche. The shield is surmounted by the open royal crown and draped on either side by elaborately rendered ermine-lined mantling tied with tasselled cords. The denomination 2500 REIS is inscribed in the lower field along the inner edge of the beaded border.
