The BEAC issues currency on behalf of six Central African nations — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of the Congo — whose monetary union dates to the CFA franc zone arrangements formalized after independence in the early 1960s. The jack in a standard French deck derives from the knave, a court card ranking below the queen that carried different regional identities across European card-making traditions. The Parisian pattern, which became dominant globally, assigned the Jack of Clubs the name Lancelot.
