Struck to commemorate the April 1977 marriage of Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn to his first cousin Princess Soamsawali Kitiyakara, this issue belongs to a series of royal occasion gold pieces Thailand produced with some regularity under Rama IX. The union lasted until 1993, when Vajiralongkorn — by then long estranged — formalized his relationship with actress Yuvadhida Polpraserth, a divorce that preceded two further marriages before his 2019 accession as Rama X.
Mintages for Thai royal commemorative gold of this period were tightly controlled and largely absorbed by the domestic collector market.
