Obverse description The obverse features the Somali Republic coat of arms centrally placed within a rectangular cartouche, depicting two leopards as supporters flanking a shield charged with a five-pointed star, with a wreath below. The legend THE TREASURES OF TUTANKHAMUN arcs around the upper periphery in bold raised Latin lettering, while SOMALI REPUBLIC appears within the cartouche above and below the arms respectively. The denomination 250 SHILLINGS is inscribed in a separate panel beneath the cartouche, and the date 2008 appears prominently in the lower field. Egyptian-themed decorative motifs, including hieroglyphic-style figures and winged imagery, are incused into the flanking panels on either side of the central cartouche.

Additional information

Somalia's "Treasures of Tutankhamun" series was part of a wave of licensed commemorative issues produced for the international collector market in the mid-2000s, authorized through Somalia's nominal issuing authority during a period when the country had no functioning central government. The Central Bank of Somalia had effectively ceased operations years earlier; these coins were contracted through outside minting agencies targeting European and North American collectors, not Somali circulation.

The scarab pectoral from Tutankhamun's tomb — the physical artifact this coin references — was found in 1922 by Howard Carter's excavation team and is held at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
