| Additional information |
Somalia's commemorative coinage of the early 2000s was largely driven by foreign minting houses producing collector pieces with minimal connection to the issuing authority — the Central Bank of Somalia at this point had little functional monetary infrastructure, the country having had no effective central government since 1991. This piece was almost certainly produced for the European collector market rather than any domestic circulation.
John Paul II died in April 2005, which places this issue among the wave of memorial coinage struck that same year across dozens of nominal issuers worldwide.
