Additional information

Somalia's use of its mint authority for foreign-market commemoratives accelerated sharply through the 1990s, with the Central Bank licensing coin programs that had no domestic circulation intent whatsoever. This piece is one of dozens issued under that arrangement — produced almost certainly by a European contract mint and sold directly into the collector market, never touching Somali soil in any meaningful quantity.

The Sydney Games themselves opened in September 2000, over a year after this coin was struck and sold.
