Somalia's use of its mint authority to produce foreign-themed commemoratives became a cottage industry in the early 2000s, with the Somali government licensing designs to European distributors who had little connection to the country itself. This piece commemorates England's 1966 World Cup victory at Wembley — an event that occurred 37 years before the coin's issue date and had no particular relevance to Somalia.
The tournament's final against West Germany ended 4–2 after extra time, with Geoff Hurst's controversial third goal — whether it crossed the line remains disputed to this day — remaining one of football's most argued moments.
