Tanzania marked twenty-five years of independence from British rule in 1985 — a period that had seen Julius Nyerere's *Ujamaa* socialist collectivization program drive the national economy into serious decline, with GDP contracting and foreign debt mounting through the late 1970s and early 1980s.
