Obverse description Central field depicts a standing female figure holding an aircraft propeller, accompanied by a heraldic two-headed eagle with the body of a lion. A map of Antarctica occupies the lower portion of the field. The denomination and date appear in the lower legend, while the bilingual legend in Cyrillic and Latin script encircles the design along the outer ring.

Reverse description The nickel-plated steel centre features a bust-length portrait of Soviet test pilot Grigory Yakovlevich Bakhchivandzhi facing slightly right, inscribed with his name and life dates 1909–1943, accompanied by a Hero of the Soviet Union Gold Star medal. Below the portrait, a three-quarter view of the Bereznyak-Isayev BI-1 rocket-powered aircraft is depicted in high relief, with the date 1942 in the exergue. The surrounding brass ring carries the Cyrillic legend «ИСТОРИЯ РОССИЙСКОЙ АВИАЦИИ» at the top and «ПЕРВЫЙ РЕАКТИВНЫЙ САМОЛЕТ СССР БИ-1» along the lower arc.
