Issued specifically for the 1986 FIFA World Cup hosted by Mexico — itself only awarded to the country after Colombia withdrew citing financial difficulties in 1982. Mexico became the first nation to host the tournament twice, having done so previously in 1970.
The series ran across two years of production, with 1985-dated strikes serving as advance issues ahead of the tournament. KM#500 sits in a broader commemorative program that spanned multiple denominations in both gold and silver.
