Macao's lunar gold issues have been produced since the 1980s, but the 2016 Monkey falls in the second cycle — the series having completed its first full 12-year rotation and begun again. The Monetary Authority tightly controls mintages on these, and the 2016 issue was released predominantly to the regional collector market in Hong Kong and mainland China, where demand for Monkey-year gold is historically the strongest of the zodiac cycle.
