The Cassa Rurale di Taio was one of dozens of small rural cooperative banks in Trentino that issued their own emergency fractional notes during Italy's severe coin shortage of the 1970s. The shortage was real enough that municipalities, businesses, and even phone companies famously substituted candy, tokens, and telephone tokens for small change. These locally printed fiduciary notes — technically irregular under Banca d'Italia regulations but tolerated in practice — filled a genuine transactional gap in remote Alpine communities where Rome's solutions arrived slowly if at all.
Taio is a small town in the Val di Non. Tipolitografia Stampa Rapida in Trento handled production for several such institutions across the province.
