Banque du Liban introduced this piece as part of a broader effort to issue collector-oriented circulation coins during a period when Lebanon's 250-livre denomination had effectively lost purchasing power in everyday transactions. Nordic gold — the same copper-aluminum-zinc-tin alloy used for the Euro's outer ring — was chosen specifically for its resistance to tarnishing and its warm visual appearance without the cost of gold content. The rhodium plating over selective areas was a purely aesthetic decision, unusual for a coin at this denomination level.
Lebanon's lucky coin tradition draws on a deeply embedded regional custom of gifting small-denomination coins for good fortune, particularly at weddings and births.
