Obverse description The obverse displays the full coat of arms of Zambia in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The shield, charged with wavy vertical lines representing the Zambezi River, is supported by a man in traditional dress to the left and a woman in traditional dress to the right. Above the shield, an African Fish Eagle with wings spread perches atop crossed pick and hoe tools. Below the shield, a scroll bears the national motto ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION flanking a maize cob, with a mine shaft and zebra visible in the compartment. The legend ZAMBIA arcs along the upper rim, with the date 1993 inscribed in the lower field.

Additional information

Zambia's large-format silver issues of the early 1990s were produced almost entirely for the collector export market — the kwacha was in freefall against hard currencies during this period, and a 250-kwacha face value represented a fraction of the metal's intrinsic worth even at the time of issue. The Bank of Zambia licensed production to foreign mints rather than striking domestically.

The African Fish Eagle had been Zambia's national bird since independence in 1964, its cry famously described as the quintessential sound of the African interior.
